Insulin pumps are FDA approved small wearable computerized devices that deliver short acting insulin continuously via a tiny cannula 24/7 to control blood sugars in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. These devices are programmed with specific basal insulin delivery rates for different times of the day and night, and boluses for mealtime and snacks. These customized rates are determined by your doctor based on your body's individual requirements. Some insulin pumps come with built-in continuous glucose sensors that, on automatic mode, detects your blood sugars and delivers the appropriate amount of insulin. These devices have alerts and alarms to prevent your blood sugars from going out of a preset target range. Blood sugar readings are transmitted wirelessly to your phone or the cloud, so your endocrinologist can review and interpret these results, and develop an effective individualized treatment plan to maintain optimal glucose control.
